Rev. Barbara A. Haigler was born in St. Matthews, South Carolina, where she graduated from St. Matthews High School. She attended South Carolina State University and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry magna cum laude. For 28 years she worked as an Experimental Chemist and was the Hazardous Materials Manager with Department Energy Contractors in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
An ordained Elder in The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, she has served faithfully for years in a number of capacities. In addition to having pastored Craigs Chapel, Mt. Zion and Speights Chapel A.M.E. Zion Churches, she has been the Administrative Assistant to Bishop Warren M. Brown and the late Bishop Milton A. Williams, Sr. Most recently she served as the Administrative Assistant to the late Bishop Roy Anderson Holmes. She has traveled to the Mozambique and Malawi Annual Conferences in Africa and extensively throughout the United States serving in various ministerial capacities. A history maker, Rev. Haigler was appointed the first female Presiding Elder in the history of the Tennessee Conference in June of 2006 by Bishop Louis Hunter, Sr. Prior to being appointed pastor (the first female) of the historic Broadway Temple AME Zion Church, she served as the Secretary of the Tennessee Conference as well as the Executive Secretary of the Presiding Elders’ Council of The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
Rev. Haigler is known for her love of service, her sweet demeanor, and her spirit of excellence. She is truly a woman of God who gives of herself and works tirelessly to serve and do the Master’s will with a Christ-like attitude. She often says to those with whom she comes in contact, “No matter what my circumstance, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
